"QRA Day" 15 July 2001 Press Report
Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome echoed to the thunder of Lightning jet fighters when the Lightning Preservation Group (LPG) held a fund raising day on Sunday 15th July. The Group's aim is to rebuild the hangars which used to house Lightnings when they were at the sharp end of Britain's defences in the Cold War. The Quick Reaction Alert hangars, usually known simply as "Q-Sheds", used to be sited at the end of the runway at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, so the Lightnings could respond immediately to any intrusion by the Russians into UK airspace.
The aircraft are no longer allowed to fly, but in their heyday they could fly at twice the speed of sound (1500mph) and were designed to climb to 50,000 feet (10 miles high) within 6 minutes of starting the engines! When they were withdrawn from RAF service in 1988, the LPG was formed to stop the only truly supersonic fighter designed by Britain from being scrapped.
Enthuses LPG President Richard Norris, "Everyone had a great day, there is still enormous enthusiasm from the public when the Lightnings are fast-taxied down the runway with their afterburners blazing! Almost 1000 people came to enjoy the day and through their generosity we have raised another £5000 towards our target of £50,000. On September 2nd there is another open day in partnership with British Aviation Heritage, and by the end of the year we aim to start Phase 1 of the museum project, to shot-blast, paint and erect the framework of the hangars. The rate of progress will then depend on the generosity of supporters."
Donations of any size are welcomed, and if you give £50 or more then
your name (or a name of your choice) will be permanently displayed on a
Roll of Honour inside the hangar. Please make any donations
